on the subject of pausing

hey all its ur boy jamal here -- u know the 1 from daily japanese thread on 4channel。oh u have no idea what that is ? well no matter lol。anyway its time to talk about a very important subject that should be relatively common sense but here in the english speaking japanese "learning" community is most certainly not as common sense comes at quite the hefty premium haha。

~pausing~

so whats the deal with this pausing thing and why does it matter to me the nihongo hopeful u may ask。well recently ive noticed that theres some lesser iq individuals (90-110) out there on the vast open internet frontier who find it is good practice to spend upwards of 60 minutes (some ppl even 90 minutes! wow!) to complete a 20 minute episode of anime or whatever lol。this is just 愚かさ at the 最大 level。if u had to mouseover or otherwise look up those 2 words then perfect this is the article u need to be reading most right now。

so look heres a important part of language acquisition that often gets overlooked by ppl who just have to look up every single word 100% of the time: spoken japanese needs to be heard in its natural flow at its natural speed 100% of the time。im gonna repeat this again w/ really big letters and underline and bold and shit to emphasize its importance or w/e

spoken japanese needs to b heard in its natural flow at its natural speed 100% of the time。

ok so hopefully u read that thing cuz if u didnt then ur fucked forever。heaven use guy im looking at u。anyway the idea here is when ur watching a program on the telly、u need to watch it as it is presented。that means no slowing the speed down (or raising it u fuckign sickos !)。that means no pausing in between utterances to look up some words u dont know cuz ur japanese is absolute dogshit bc u keep trying to learn everything instead of just sit back and acquire like a true language acquiring "chad"。u need to just watch the program and enjoy。that means especially preserving the flow and progression of the scenes themselves and the conversation/monologues therein。maybe u can and should look a couple things up afterward if ur goldfish brain has the capacity to remember things in the short-term。but in the moment ur not allowed to。if ur talkin to a thug ass ninja on the mean streets of southside kawasaki do u think hes gonna be like いやまあ別に構わんけど as u interject that u need 2 look up what hes saying as hes tryin to tell ur  malodorous honky ass to go back to ur country ? i dont think so。u need to take the verbal (spoken) language at its natural pace without breaking its flow。u know how if ur tryna take a piss and u manually clamp ur pisser shut its very uncomfortable and possibly a bit painful to do mid-stream ? yah thats basically what these ppl r doin to their japanese acquisition stream。the pain isnt felt immediately -- its felt when years later ur japanese is still absolute trash。pausing is detrimental bc it ruins the act of human communication itself which has many more intangibles than just words themselves in a vacuum -- and these intangibles aid comprehensibility greatly。u probably take them for granted never noticing them in ur native language but they are most certainly there。

oh my god why does this guy write like this whats his problem ??

so if pausing telly programs is out of the question then u may be wondering "but jamalsama how do i understand the テレビ番組s ??" well theres only one way to understand them and that is if the input is comprehensible in real time。that means there needs to be some way for u to "understand" the "messages" as they are "sent"。if u know japanese then u will just understand them on the count of knowing japanese haha。but for the rest of u it gets a bit trickier。of course ur strongest way is with subtitles in ur native language (going to assume english here)。now now i know some of u lower iq ppl out there in language learning lala land might think theres something wrong with subtitles but theres not。bc the spoken language is japanese and thats what u should be hearing -- at native speed with no interruptions。the subtitles are there only 2 help u "get" the "message" from the japanese u heard。its very important to understand this does NOt mean actively breaking down the japanese and trying to decipher it to fit what the subtitles say -- this is another pitfall that plagues the foolish and lesser iq。u dont need to actively try to do anything but just listen the best u can and enjoy what ur watching。remember this is entertainment not study hall。u can study whatever foolish shit u do at another time but when ur watchin the telly its most certainly time to just have a good time and enjoy the program。

~pausing as it relates to media other than tv/radio or real life conversation~

so one question that lower mid tier iqs (~115-120) tend to ask is how is reading while consulting a dicktionary not pausing or how are playing visual novels and looking things up not pausing ? well its very simple。books arent dictated to u。u have to do the reading。if someone else thats native reads them to u then u are not allowed pause them as they are reading at natural speed bc u have tread back into the spoken language that u must be hearing in its natural flow at its natural speed 100% of the time。however if its u thats doing the reading u are not native and are thus immune to this rule。yay for epic loop holes ! jubilations ! lol。well not so fast ur japanese is complete shit never forget this。as a result、in trying to read、the most important thing is to select material appropriate for ur reading level as best u can。if u cant read or understand most of what ur reading、plz just try something else until u find something better。i tend to recommend 絵本s and 漫画 w/ 仮名 for the young budding readers。u can even find nice ladies reading 絵本s aloud just like ur mother would on youtube。this is good stuff for emerging readers。

as it relates to visual novels、first of all basically visual novels are for japanese adults。this means a lot of teenagers will be reading them too。so if ur not as good as a japanese teenager then visual novels are not a great point of entry for u simple as。ppl still want to beat their head against the wall on this bc they want to believe theres some magic to visual novels and u know i dont blame them。its just ur gonna spend a lot of time and get very little out of it for a long time。itll pay off someday tho as i was there circa 2003。oh yah so the pausing thing。so pausing doesnt really happen in visual novels bc they also arent exactly dictated to u。yah there are spoken lines and they play at native speed spoken at native flow but u still have to progress the scene urself unless u use the auto read function which i find doesnt really restore solid flow -- mainly due to the visual novel medium itself。that means its very much up to the player -- or reader as it were -- to dictate the pace on their own。that means u are again immune to the rule thanks to the loophole mentioned above。check ur privilege LOL。the only thing they dont control are the spoken lines that when the clip plays its at native speed and at natural flow。ud have to go very far out of ur way to fuck with that so in my professional opinion as an esteemed nihongologist u cant really pause visual novels。they are just picture books with sound clips and some elevator music in the background lol。again、i dont recommend these if u think チーズスイートホーム says "cheese sweet home"。

*final thoughts*

uhh dont spend more than the programs run time watching the program。thats really it。if u want to examine it more in depth afterward and spend hours on it thats fine but u at least need that first run-through to be completely at native speed and preserve native flow of conversation。not doing so stifles ur acquisition of japanese greatly。if the majority of ur tv programs are input in such a butchered and stifled way u will never acquire japanese -- especially if u dont communicate with japanese ppl regularly。also for the love of god if u decide to take a episode after uve watched it and break it down and strew its innards all over the place、plz dont do autistic things like try to memorize the tv shows dialogue。the shit some of u fuck heads out there do is seriously mental illness -- so much so that it makes this blogpost seem sane and normal。

anyway cya next time turds

maybe i sohuld make a twitter or some shit so some of u knuckleheads can @ me ur stupid shit that i will berate u for in the public forum otherwise u can find me on https://boards.4channel.org/jp/djt chillin w. the boys
